Automated experimentation aims to conduct a series of scientific experiments according to pre-specified executable protocols without significant additional experiment design decisions and manipulation by human experimenters. There has been no consensus in the traditional sciences or e-Sciences about how these executable protocols should be specified and executed to automate experimentation. The activities under this 12-month theme will include a workshop, an international conference, and working groups meetings, aiming to establish automated experimentation as a new e-Science area and clarify the theoretical and technical issues through specific examples for automated experiments in biomedicine.
